ETEC 565A: LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES: SELECTION, DESIGN, AND APPLICATION

ETEC 565A was a challenging course but one of the most rewarding courses. This course pushed me to cook without a recipe.  That is to say, I needed to put into practice some of the theories and principles that I had learned in previous courses.  It was also an opportunity to try out an old recipe with a new spin.   Overall, it was time to demonstrate my own competencies on a greater skills. Moreover, there were various scenarios based on probable situations I might encounter that I had to think through.  This course provided me exposure to a range of tools and learning systems that I now use in my own teaching setting.

Artifact 1: Moodle Course Site for Social Studies 11

I took this course near the end of my MET journey so I felt prepared going into the course.  With a solid understanding of sound educational principles, it was time to put them to use and create a recipe from scratch.  The Moodle site project was just the project.

Before beginning work on my actual Moodle site, I decided to do some necessary background research to determine the best way to design an online course.  Through my research, which included talking to students who were enrolled in online courses, I found that most online courses have some serious design flaws.  This has led to a very poor completion rate (43% for Grades 10-12) for online courses.   I wanted to implement sound pedagogical design principles into my course to ensure student success.  You can read more about those thoughts here.

Below is a video overview of the Moodle Course.  If you would like to access the course, click here.  From there, select my name (Quentin Flokstra_example).  To login, use the username: johnnycanuck; password: @Canadian1.

Artifact 2: Digital Story

My online tagline is: I am passionate about faith, history, technology, and the interplay between all of them.  This project forced me to articulate the connection between those and how my own journey into teaching has led me to focus on those areas.  Although the story itself was important, I did need to choose a tool.  I wanted to choose a new tool to expand my own technical competencies.

So, I decided on using PowToon which was fairly straightforward to use.  It has a lot of built-in fonts, backgrounds, and neat animations that a lot of other online video creation tools do not have. (For more information on Powtoon, and other great tools, visit the recipe page!)  Overall, I found this project to be fun to do and it was easy to create a punchy video to hold people's attention (I hope!).
