Current Endeavours

(What's on the stove now ...)

Cooking never ends! Once a meal is enjoyed, it is time to think about the next one.  Not every meal is a culinary masterpiece, but each meal needs to be nutritious and tasty!  We eat a few square meals a day plus snacks so there is always something on the go in the kitchen. It is exciting to be able to use recently learned skills to practical use.  As a chef, when I get a new recipe I like trying it out soon.  In the same way, I have ongoing work keeping me busy with the day-to-day nutritious needs of my own students and broader educational circles.

Digital Literacy & Citizenship Committee

I joined this sub-committee of the SCSBC ICT committee in May, 2015.  Our task is outlined as follows:

The Digital Citizenship and Literacy (DCL) Committee Mandate will follow these basic tenants (and will be fleshed out further by the committee):

o   Develop working definition of Digital Citizenship from Christian perspective

o   Set vision:

  • Definition

  • Deconstruction

  • Prevention/promotion  versus reaction – Discourse / mindfulness

o   Support and equip:

  • Framework

  • Questions for clarifying school DC initiative (possibly around policy, scope and sequence)

  • Facilitate dialogue

o   Advocate for digital citizenship

  • Share work of sub-committee

  • Resourcing

The ultimate goal for this sub-committee is to provide a structure for assisting schools as they seek to develop plans around training students in the realm of digital citizenship and literacy.  What must be considered?  What questions will assist in articulating local school direction and goal setting?  How might schools go about defining local curriculum, integration, and literacy skills?

Our committee has met twice already and is also working asynchronously via an online working document to meet our goals.  I am excited to be a part of this venture and look forward to publishing our guide for the SCSBC group of schools in mid-2016.

Professional Develoment Committee

In May, 2014, I was invited to join the NWCSI-CTABC Convention Planning Committee. This committee is a group made up of mostly teachers from Northwest Washington and BC who are responsible for organizing a two-day annual convention for professional development for Christian educators in BC and Northwest Washington.  Part of my role on this committee is being part of a team to determine our focus for each convention, brainstorming a list of featured and keynote speakers, troubleshooting technological and logistical issues, consider budget needs accounting for a fluctuating Canadian dollar, aiding in the running of the convention, finding workshop leaders within our school communities, and facilitating workshops during the convention.

More recently, with my work that I have done with MET, I have been tasked with overseeing a sub-committee to launch a new website for our committee.  I am excited by this challenge and look forward to launching our new website in early 2016.

Effective & Efficient Communication

This year, I was introduced to Remind.  This is a great online communication tool which ensures safe communication between teachers and students. Teachers can send text messages to students (minimum 3 users).  I have set up user groups for each class so that I can easily send messages to a designated group.  Students cannot see my number and I cannot see their mobile numbers. Moreover, students cannot message me directly.  As such, it is safe for all parties involved.  Students can also sign up without a mobile number by using the app.  I used this to remind students of important due dates as well as to send out assignments during class. Next year, I am planning to use this tool with my parents to enhance my communication with them.

Course Websites

In late 2010, the school I work out launched our own in-house wiki/website system for teachers to use.  I have created course websites for each of the courses that I teach (have taught).  This has been a valuable resource to supplement my classroom teaching.  It has been a great asset to students who are away for extended periods of time.  Also, it is easy to update and incorporate helpful resources for students and parents.

Moreover,  I also have a blog which I use daily to let students know what was covered in each class so that they can quickly check to remind themselves of what happened in class.

Due to the nature of the wikis, I am unable to embed the page within this website.  Feel free to click on this link to see my Socials 11 website (or click on the image below).
