ETEC 532: TECHNOLOGY IN THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES CLASSROOM

Spending time with other people and discussing some of their favourite recipes is a great way to challenge me to do more in my own kitchen.  Seeing how and what other people do is an important part of growing.  ETEC 532 pushed my own thinking on a number of issues and I was forced to grapple with my own preconceived notions about various issues.  Moreover, this course challenged me to continually assess and evaluate my own perspectives on issues and to provide other resources to back up my opinions.  Finally, when you do have some good ideas, it is important to share those with others so that the broader community can benefit.

Artifact 1: Integration of Technology Website

This group project involved five of us MET students coming together to decide first on a focus point for our project.  We primarily used Google Docs to document our discussions and to chart our planning.   Once we determined our direction and vision, we set about writing a collaborative literature review and project proposal.

It was quite interesting, and amazing, to see how five people could pull together and assess an immense amount of research in a short period of time.  This illustrated the power of collaborative learning as well as the great benefits of using Google Docs and Google Hangouts to foster the process! It was a smooth process as we each wrote a section of the paper and co-edited it together.  Once we had the literature review and proposal finalized, it was a relatively simple process in creating our website. It quickly became clear that we wanted to design a space which had a consistent feel as noted in the overall layout of the website.

For the website, my focal area was in the area of professional development, primarily the need for a re-imagining of the process in order for schools and educators to be more successful in integrating technology.

Overall, I believe that this website has a lot of useful information and links to help schools and educators set a vision for professional development in the realm of technology integration.  Our resources page is filled with exemplars to get anyone started!

Artifact 2: A Metaphor for Online Learning

One assignment in this course had us to come up with a metaphor for online learning.  With the recent World Cup fresh in my memory, I decided to look at football/soccer as a metaphor for online learning.

Although it is not a perfect metaphor, I do think there are elements that do illustrate the benefits and challenges of online learning.  What I do think is critical is that online learning needs to be viewed from a teamwork model as this indicates you cannot succeed solely on your own doing your own thing in your time.  This served as a critical part of my design focus for my projects within ETEC 565.
